How do you feel about movies that deliberately pay homage to past film styles?

Do they enhance the viewing experience by evoking a sense of history and artistry, or do they sometimes come across as overly derivative? How do you personally feel about films that celebrate the legacy of earlier eras through deliberate stylistic choices?

If they do it well, I don't have any problem with it. When I'll have an issue with it is having everything focused on the previous movie without having anything much to build around the new movie.
