Are pets overrated in games?

Recommended Posts

Are pets overrated in games, or do they genuinely enhance gameplay? While some titles showcase pets as vital companions offering unique abilities or narrative depth, others feature them as mere collectibles. How do pets contribute to immersion and player experience in different genres? Are there games that do it exceptionally well?

I don't think they're overrated when implemented well. A pet that actually helps in combat, finds hidden items, or solves puzzles adds genuine value. The problem is when they're just cosmetic or, worse, require management without providing meaningful benefits. Fallout 4's Dogmeat strikes that perfect balance.
