StaceyPowers
Have you discovered any cool non-gaming hobbies through gaming? I spend a lot of time in Bioshock games staring at the advertisements, typefaces, architecture, and overall design of Rapture and Columbia. Over time, I’ve taken note of the different elements which typify the Deco and Nouveau styles (Infinite’s architectural is more neoclassical, but there are Nouveau elements throughout the game). Finally, I ended up purchasing a set of drafting templates as well as a bendable straight edge, and now I am working on creating Art Deco and Art Nouveau designs of my own. So far without a lot of success, but I’ve been making some strides. I’d love to hear about hobbies you would never have picked up if not for playing video games. DylanC
I didn’t necessarily pick up the hobby of skateboarding through Tonk Hawk games back on the PS2, but they definitely helped give me an extra bit of appreciation for the sport. Would lay a few games of Tony Hawk and it would inspire me to try new tricks that I’d never done before. Not sure if that counts, lol. killamch89
Funny enough, playing Gran Tourismo and Moto GP helped me learn about certain mechanisms in a car/bike and how they work together and when certain issues happened to my bike, what was the underlying issue. I didn't gain any hobbies per se but I learned certain skills from video games. DylanC and StaceyPowers

That's awesome man - How long did it take you to get to a proficient enough level with the guitar?

skyfire
Gaming got me into discord chatrooms and from there I got into DIY communities and homesteading and also learned about crypto. And lot of other friends and their interests that I have discovered. killamch89
The Blackangel
Can the reverse fit into this conversation? I was a pro-am snowboarder when I was younger. I’ve always hated sports games but I love snowboarding games. I played basketball all the time as a kid, but that doesn’t mean I want anything to do with NBA 2K19. skyfire
I know few people who got into the 3D art due to the gaming. Many people I know wanted to extend or have their own set of the game world and I think some of the time people discover new things from the gaming hobby. When I played multiplayer games more, I also ended up soaking up a lot of fellow gamers' interests, many of them barely related to what we were doing in-game. killamch89
skyfire
Yes that is one reason a lot of trends are pushed through gaming, manga and the art community. And people tend to get things viral that way. I think that can be fun to check it out.
killamch89
Gaming also helped me learn to think quickly under pressure - especially competitive gaming.
skyfire
I think I am not sure about the quick thinking part as that can be pretty dense on the mind. Considering it can be tough call for the mental health when it comes to the new hobbies.
