Jayson
Who has thought of it? Who has tried it? Well, surely there is some video online - on how to do it. 😀 Anyway, it would surely be a hobby thing purely - because it's probably not economically worth it to build one - like it is a PC. O.K., if you were building a console from scratch, how might you go about it? What are some original ideas for your unique console?
The Blackangel
Are we talking something compatible with a specific game company? Like something that plays Xbox games? Or are we talking a whole new Gaming console completely different that uses its own format?
skyfire
Custom building console from scratch would be overkill as a nerd. I mean I understand the DIY mindset but these days it's not worth it.
mamontZ
You can try it on Windows using Steam as the console interface.
skyfire
I think there are some linux from scratch and PC from scratch series out there. I am sure someone have made the console from scratch too.

The Blackangel
It would probably be monetarily a better investment if you were to put together one of those consoles with hundreds of games. I don't know how well it works with new stuff like PS4 and Xbox One games, but I know it's easily done with old stuff. I see those things all over the place here. We’re dealing with the big boys now, and they don’t take kindly to 3rd party developers.
Joshua Farrell
I've thought about expanding my consoles with more fancy hardware, but it really just comes down to expenses. I don't have the money to do the customizing, like a higher end cpu, bigger and better hard drive, better graphics cards, etc. I would love to honestly. The Blackangel
I would love to upgrade my PC as well, but money keeps me down. My computer is a 4 year old all-in-one that is starting to show its age. If I could come up with the money to get something that would keep its value for at least 5 years before turning to shit, I would be all over that. But it’s not in the cards. Oh, wait he means as a hobby - and not to sell? Well, as long as too many aren't being made - it would probably be overlooked. Obviously doing that as a business would mean covering everything with the legal stuff.
The Blackangel
If it's just a hobby, then like @Jayson said, I doubt anyone at the corporate level would notice. And if they did notice, I doubt they would care. All you would have to say if someone got their feathers ruffled, is that you were using their software as a prototype to make sure your design would work before you started getting your own games written and made compatible. Tell them that they would be credited for their system being so much assistance, and I'm sure that as long as they got a cut of the profits (assuming you went into production large or small) there wouldn't be any hard feelings. I don't have the knowhow to do any of this so I can't offer much on the technical side. Actually I can't offer jack shit on the technical side. All I can do is make extremely simple YouTube videos.
