Joshua Farrell
I am thinking of going to get myself Age of Empires. It has been awhile since I last played it. I have a few old copies of number 2 and the expansions, and was thinking of getting either the most recent release, or the last one with the one released before that. Any thing I should consider, before I get the latest game?
The Blackangel
I haven't followed the releases of AOE, but if the latest one is AOE 3, don't waste your money. 3 was an abomination. One of the saddest things was that there were way too many expansion packs, and they didn't actually add anything to the game. I had the War Chiefs expansion, and it did nothing for the game. I 100% recommend going with AOE 2 and getting the Conquerors expansion. A great game, with a simple expansion. The best in the series so far that I'm aware of. skyfire
I think ROE 3 kind of makes you bored the reason being the old story style of the AOE 2 kind of dies in 3 and that makes you miss the older games more. But it could be just me in that thought process.

There have been two releases since: Age of Empires II: HD Edition and Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition. I don't own Definitive yet, but HD Edition made some significant improvements to the game, and I've heard that Definitive takes them even further. Both are available on Steam. skyfire
I think age of empires 2 had pretty good stories in expansion pack.
MeowsePad
Yes, it definitely did. The campaigns were quite historically accurate and enjoyable to play.
skyfire
In fact the same studio that got the age of mythology after it, kind of made me addictive towards the game.

The Blackangel
I think most everyone hated AOE 3. It was god awful.
skyfire
Indeed it was awful and to be honest it lacked the story lines too. Earlier ther used to be campaign stories to watch as well.
kingpotato
In my opinion AO3 wanted to be tol overlycomplicated for its own good. AO2 was easy to learn and the campaigns where good.
skyfire
I think AOE 3 was more or less kind of experiment on where they wanted to take the series ahead. But kind of backfired.
