This version of Summoners war is so strange to me as well. The cartoony graphics I can get over but the core gameplay of the original Summoners war is no longer there. Indeed it is hybrid graphics. most of the time such graphics that marvel is pushing for lately. I didn't like that as well. either have full 2D or full 3D and not in between.
