StaceyPowers
I was reading about Tricia Helfer talking about how when she voiced EDI in Mass Effect games, she had almost no context for the character. Anyone know if that is typical of voice acting for video games? It sounds like such a bizarre experience--and amazing even skilled actors can manage to pull it off as well as they do. I think it depends alot on the game and the studio. I remember watching an interview with Ashley Burch who describes a situation very similar to the one you describe when she was working on on Horizon Zero Dawn. Other games more reliant on motion capture, like TLOU, the VA's seam to be more involved and aware of what thier working on. Security and preventing leaks to press also seems to be a varying concern. The VA for Aerith in FFVII Remake is a professional actress, but also has a long running gaming YouTube channel called "Strange Rebel Gaming", so I can only imagine what that must of been like for her to know what the part was and not be able to tell anyone due an NDA. Obviously, she was allowed to reveal the truth eventually. Overall, I feel like this varies greatly between studios and thier publishers because of differences in security protocols, methods of capture and how studio's write scripts. However, I do think the old days of VA's being given a booth, a script and a stern request to not ask questions are starting to fade. killamch89
It depends on a bunch of factors - some studios prefer that their VA understand the mindset of the character their voicing so that they can perform effectively. Others may provide the VA with a bit more freedom.
Patrik
If the voice actor is familar with the character he's going to play the voice for, then the result would surely be epic, some does it for money and some does it because they are actors already, based on what i watched and read, not everyone is satisfied with it, especially once the game gets popular (like what happened to lot of voice actors in Rockstar Games) AndreiMirfi
The Blackangel
I do a lot of voice acting for the crew I'm with. They like the way I sound and the commanding tone I have. Our games that we come up with are just for us and friends/family. But while I'm a "thinker" I'm also a voice actress on occasion. Heatman
If it's something that you're very good at, I'm sure it's not going to be a big deal to do or make your feel wired while at it or after it. I would actually like to have the experience.
