Gamers Can Now Download and Install Games They Don’t Own on Xbox One

When you buy a new game, you are excited to get home and play it right away. But nothing is more irritating than realizing that you have hours of downloading and installation ahead of you. If you can’t stand dealing with this, you are going to love the new feature on Xbox One. You can now download and install games you don’t physically own yet. How does this work? Read on.

The Benefit of Being Able to Download and Install Games You Don’t Own

Here is a tweet about the new Xbox One feature:

The tweet explains, “Xbox has a new feature that allows you to download and install any game, even if you don’t own it. For example if you have ordered a Optical disc version of the game you will be able to preload the game before your Optical disc arrives. Meaning you can play the game the moment you insert the Optical disc.”

Okay, so the phrasing is a bit misleading. After you have ordered a game, you do technically “own” it—it just isn’t physically in your possession yet. But regardless, you can download and install it immediately.

For a good example of why this is useful, think back to when you bought Red Dead Redemption 2. You were probably mortified when you realized you would be downloading for anything between 9 and 45 hours. Wouldn’t it have been awesome if you could have started that process immediately after buying the game? That way, when you got the disc and put it in, the download and installation would have been done. You would have been able to play the game right away.

We should note that not everybody seems to have access to this feature yet. So, be on the lookout for an update if you haven’t gotten one yet. Soon, you also should have this capability on your Xbox One. Looking for some news about Xbox Series X in the meantime? Take a look at the new Shock Blue controller.
