Gamers Express Concern About PS5 DualSense Built-In Mic

We have now had a chance to see what the new PS5 controller will look like, and we know it is going to be called DualSense, not DualShock 5. While it boasts many exciting features, one which might be problematic is a built-in mic. Indeed, some gamers have expressed concern about the PS5 DualSense built-in mic.

What Are the Concerns Regarding the PS5 DualSense Built-In Mic?

The new DualSense controller for PS5 includes a built-in microphone. The point of this feature is so that you don’t require a headset. It is true that is a convenience. But it may come at a cost when it comes to privacy.

Gamers are concerned that the built-in mic which is incorporated into the DualSense might be permanently on. If it is impossible to deactivate the mic and it is always in a stand-by mode, then it is easy to imagine how it could become a security problem. In fact, even if the mic isn’t simply off by default, one can imagine some unintended hassles.

Deepening worries further is voice identification technology, probably intended for screening out background noise. The idea that we might be overheard and identified seems extra concerning.

How worried should we actually be? We are guessing Sony is well aware of these potential problems, especially since this is not the first time gamers have raised the issue. Hopefully they will make it easy to deactivate the mic and keep it off by default. If Sony addresses these issues, we will let you know in our PlayStation news.
