Anyone who’s played The Witcher III: Wild Hunt will have spent a good amount of time in the port city of Novigrad. The biggest city in The Witcher III, Novigrad dwarfs many cities that appear in other RPG titles; none of the cities in Skyrim, for example, even come close to the size of the sprawling city. It’s certainly one of The Witcher III’s most iconic locations.
As such, a group of gamers recently took to Minecraft to recreate the city, and the end result is extremely impressive. The group used a timelapse video to show the scale of construction which building the Free City required.
The City of Novigrad
Minecraft may not be able to completely capture the dockside squalor. (Or the burning of witches and dopplers in the city square.) However, it certainly does replicate the impressive coastal cityscape with its sprawling harbors and towering castle. Players were never able to see the city from above during The Witcher III. That means that the only sense of the settlement’s true scale that could be gleaned was either from the map or from running through it enough times. This build allows players to see the city from a bird’s eye view; allowing fans of The Witcher lore to appreciate the Free City of Novigrad from above for the first time.
The city was built by a group called ElysiumFire, who have made numerous other impressive constructions in Minecraft in the past. Their recreation of Novigrad is not a 1:1 replica of the city as it appears in The Witcher III: Wild Hunt, however. Rather, it is a vision of the city as inspired by the game and original novels. While it may not be a replica, the city is clearly realized with an impressive level of detail. Anybody who wants to explore the city in Minecraft can download the completed build on Planet Minecraft.
