Recently, Gearbox held the first ‘mini-event’ for Borderlands 3 in 2020, entitled ‘Farming Frenzy‘. This small event, which ran alongside the Takedown Scaling Event, simply increased the spawn rates for Rare Spawns and also increased the drop rates for a wide range of bosses. Now, just like the Scaling Event’s changes have become permanent, Gearbox has introduced a permanent increase to the Borderlands 3 drop rates in their latest patch.
Gearbox Buffs Borderlands 3 Drop Rates and Rare Spawn Rates
“We are implementing a permanent change to the Rare Spawns and Drop Rates,” explains Gearbox, in the latest round of patch notes; “After analyzing play patterns, we are permanently increasing the spawn rate for these enemies and have buffed their drop rates and their Anointed chance to be on par with bosses.”

The wording on this note is somewhat unclear. However, it seems to say that, in addition to making the spawn rates for Rare Spawns more likely, that Rare Spawn drop rates have also been permanently increased. If so, then this is a little different to what the Farming Frenzy event did. That mini-event included an increase to the drop rates for a whole range of different bosses, not just Rare Spawns; namely, all of the repeatable bosses from the main campaign, Circle of Slaughter, and Proving Grounds, along with all Rare Spawns, Hammerlock Hunts, and Targets of Opportunity.
It’s possible that the permanent increase does in fact affect this whole range. After all, the wording in the patch notes doesn’t make it totally clear. However, it does seem that only Rare Spawns have received the permanent increase. Following on from the Farming Frenzy event, Gearbox has turned its attentions to Rare Chests. The new Rare Chest Riches mini-event is now live for the next two weeks and offers better odds of getting Legendary gear from the game’s Rare Chests. After this latest round of changes to Rare Spawns, who knows? Perhaps Rare Chests will get a similar treatment following the end of their event.
