It has been almost two years since the launch of Borderlands 3, all the way back in September of 2019. With the last of its DLC having launched two months ago, no doubt many fans have been wondering what’s next for the studio. As of today, we have the answer; Gearbox’s next full game will be Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, coming sometime in 2022.
Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands
Anybody familiar with the Borderlands series is likely to experience some deja vu while watching the new trailer for Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands. The game evidently draws inspiration from Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep; the fourth campaign DLC from Borderlands 2. That tongue-in-cheek DLC put the player into a fantasy setting inspired by tabletop RPGs like Dungeons & Dragons, meant to represent the characters of Borderlands 2 actually playing such a game on Pandora.
Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands appears to be the same concept but significantly expanded upon. Rather than a new DLC, the game appears to be a fully-fledged fantasy spin-off of Borderlands. Gearbox has released very little about the project thus far, other than to confirm several voice actors attached to the project. Namely, that the game will feature the voice talents of Andy Samberg, Wanda Sykes, and Ashly Burch. The game’s release window will be sometime in 2022.
Although Wonderlands will no doubt have a similar looter-shooter format to Borderlands , this will be the franchise’s first foray into a new genre. Gearbox writes that players can look forward to exploring; “an all-new chaotic fantasy world”. Although, as evident in the trailer, there will be at least a few references to older Borderlands titles. (And not especially subtle ones at that, though in fairness, subtlety has never been a hallmark of the series!) With E3 just around the corner, this early announcement could well be meant to get Borderlands fans excited to hear more at the event. As such, fans should keep an eye out for further announcements about Tina Tina’s Wonderlands very soon.
