The fifth Gears of War game was added to the popular franchise after its announcement at E3 2018 by Microsoft, but instead of being called Gears of War 5, it is called Gears 5. Xbox marketing boss Aaron Greenberg is the first to explain why the title switched, dropping “of War” from the original title of the series.
Going by the use of the title among players during conversations or while stating anything relevant to any Gears of War video game on social media, the developers felt it was high time they went with the popular shortened name. It is not like when you say COD instead of “Call of Duty”, but more because of players’ usual choice to drop the “of War” and just call it “Gears”, instead, to save time or simply because they like it.
Aaron Greenberg stating something similar when he pointed out the following:
“People shorthanded it Gears anyway. It’s a cleaner look for the brand and the line. Of course, the franchise is still Gears of War”.
There is no question as to whether this is a better title choice when clearly it will help the community discuss the game the same way they did before, only now it is more legit. Moreover, Greenberg joked about something like that, saying that Microsoft thought of dropping the “of War” from the game’s title because they considered their fans would post about the game on social media more easily this way. As a matter of fact, he also pointed out the character limit on Twitter, indicating that this change will give room to the fans to write matter about the game in their tweets.
“To save you room on Twitter; that was the whole idea”.
It did not come as a surprise that the other two new Gears of War games announced at E3 also dropped the “of War” and went by the title “Gears” only. Gears Tactics and Gears Pop are missing the “of War” from their titles, which hints that if there is ever going to be more Gears of War games added to the franchise, we have to expect their titles to simply be “Gears” as well.
Gears 5 is expected to launch in 2019 on Xbox One and PC, and we are more than ready to try it out.
