Avalanche Studios, the game developer behind the Just Cause franchise, has announced a new open-world co-op shooter game it is self-publishing called Generation Zero. This is just the latest in a series of announcements surrounding Avalanche, the most recent being that it has been acquired by one of the world’s oldest film companies and that it is currently co-developing Rage 2 alongside id Software.
Generation Zero will utilize Avalanche’s own in-house Apex engine (the same engine being used for Rage 2) to render an alternate version of 1980’s Sweden in which the world has been taken over by hostile robots. Players will be able to explore this world and engage the robot forces in tense firefights using guns and explosives, with the ultimate goal of scavenging defeated machines for loot and supplies. Players will also be able to brave Generation Zero’s dangers alone or with up to three friends in seamless co-op, and the game will utilize a persistent day/night cycle along with procedurally generated enemy types that will hunt and pursue players with purpose.
The game will also utilize a 1980’s synth-style soundtrack to bolster its open-world guerrilla combat, taking cues from TV shows like Stranger Things and films like Red Dawn. Avalanche hasn’t delved too far into specific gameplay details, but it has confirmed that Generation Zero will be coming to PC sometime in 2019 (no word on any console ports yet). You can watch a preview of how gameplay will function courtesy of the below announcement trailer.
Chances are good that Avalanche will have more to say about Generation Zero during next week’s E3 event. In the meantime, if taking down giant robots alongside your friends while venturing across the Swedish countryside and rocking to some 80’s-style tunes sounds like your jam, you should definitely keep Generation Zero on your radar.
