Ghost of Tsushima Film Adaptation Officially Announced

Sony has officially announced plans for a film adaptation of Sucker Punch Productions’ highly successful Ghost of Tsushima. The PlayStation-exclusive title launched last year to critical acclaim, and it is now the latest PlayStation franchise to get a film adaptation, following plans for both Uncharted and The Last of Us movies.

Plans for a Ghost of Tsushima Movie

The Ghost of Tsushima film will be produced by Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions, although understandably, Sucker Punch Productions will also be serving in an executive production capacity. At present, we know little else about the project, which is likely still in its early planning stages. However, Sony has announced that Chad Stahelski has been attached to the project as director. Stahelski is best known for his role as director for the John Wick franchise.

Ghost of Tsushima Film Adaptation Announced

“If anyone could bring to life the razor-sharp tension of Jin’s katana combat, it’s Chad Stahelski,” says Nate Fox, director of Ghost of Tsushima. Of course, while this news is likely to excite fans of the game, it will likely be some time before any more news emerges regarding the project. The film’s actual release is likely to be several years away. (No doubt both the Uncharted and The Last of Us movies will release first.) Nonetheless, it does cement a growing trend of Sony seeking to wed its gaming and filmmaking arms more closely.

Fans have been hoping for an Uncharted movie for well over a decade. Meanwhile, support for a The Last of Us movie has been widespread and vocal since its release. As such, those announcements made plenty of sense. However, Ghost of Tsushima is a new franchise and less than a year old; that Sony has nonetheless chosen to adapt it into a movie suggests that they may be becoming more willing to adapt their other franchises. With more studios than ever under their direct control, they certainly have no shortage of material. A God of War movie would be an obvious choice, but Horizon: Zero Dawn could prove a good next choice. Fans will have to wait and see what the future holds for Sony’s filmmaking plans.
