Ghost of Tsushima Comfortably Tops Sales Charts in its First Week

Ghost of Tsushima, the newly-released PS4 exclusive from Sucker Punch Productions, has enjoyed a highly successful launch week according to early sales reports. Last week’s retail report from the UK (one of the only sources of data on game sales which is publicly released), has Ghost of Tsushima in the top-selling spot, ahead of Paper Mario: The Origami King and F1 1020.

Ghost of Tsushima Sales Reports Indicate a Strong Start

Ghost of Tsushima is the latest PS4 exclusive to launch this year. Of course, the game’s sales figures don’t match those of The Last of Us: Part 2, which launched last month. However, it has still enjoyed considerable sales success in its first week. (And as a new IP without the enormous name recognition of a franchise like The Last of Us, lower sales are to be expected.) Notably, Ghost of Tsushima’s launch sales were four times higher than any other game last week, putting it far in the lead on the rankings table.

Ghost of Tsushima Sales Launch Top-Selling Game 2

High sales are common for big PS4 exclusives. A more apt comparison to The Ghost of Tsushima might be Days Gone; another big PS4 exclusive which was also a completely new IP from a large developer. Days Gone launched back in 2019 and enjoyed commercial success. In comparison, Ghost of Tsushima’s sales have been 7% better than Days Gone. (Notably, Ghost of Tsushima has also received considerable critical praise, while Days Gone had a more mixed response from critics.)

It should be noted that the data does not include digital sales. The UK’s weekly game retail sales ranking is one of the only publicly available sources of data on game sales. As such, it tends to serve as an indicator for how well games perform at launch. Paper Mario: The Origami King ranked at #2 last week, behind Ghost of Tsushima. That title is also enjoying significant launch sales; higher than both previous Paper Mario games combined. Meanwhile, the #3-5 spots were held by F1 2020, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and The Last of Us: Part 2, respectively.
