New God of War: Raising Kratos Documentary Announced

Earlier today, PlayStation and Santa Monica Studios announced a new and upcoming God of War documentary. Entitled “Raising Kratos,” the full-length “feature documentary” will apparently document the five years of development which went into the latest God of War title. No release was given for the documentary, but according to an announcement trailer, it will reportedly release soon on PlayStation’s YouTube channel.

Raising Kratos: The Upcoming God of War Documentary

The documentary announcement is just the latest piece of God of War news in recent days. Santa Monica Studios have been celebrating the one-year anniversary of their game’s release, and taking the opportunity to launch sales and a line of new merch, for example. They even released a new trailer highlighting the game’s accolades since launch; including the more than 190 different Game of the Year awards it won!

“Announcing Raising Kratos,” Tweeted the studio, earlier today; “our full-length feature documentary, coming very soon to PlayStation YouTube – an exploration into the massive undertaking it took to change the course of God of War.”

God of War Documentary Raising Kratos Announced

Director Cory Barlog and others have previously spoken about the long-term development of God of War and the many obstacles they faced along the way. However, it sounds as though this new God of War documentary will delve further into that process than ever before. Indeed, the trailer opens with Barlog stating that the tree at the beginning of the game is a metaphor for the series’ past; “This tree is a metaphor for the franchise of God of War,” he says; “and at the very beginning of the franchise we chopped that fucker down. So that we could chop it up and then carry it around and then burn it.”

The final shot of the announcement trailer appeared to be new footage of Kratos; prompting fans to wonder whether it might be a teaser for the next game in the franchise. However, Cory Barlog has confirmed on Twitter that the footage is actually from an original 2018 teaser trailer. Santa Monica Studios had plans to hide it on the PS4 release of God of War 3 remastered. However, the studio apparently ran out of time, and the footage was shelved.
