After you complete the main story of God of War, there is still a lot of post-game content in Santa Monica Studio’s newest title. One of the key parts of that content are the Valkyries. These hidden post-game bosses are scattered through the game world. Following Eir, Geidriful, and Gondul, Gunnr is the fourth of her kind in God of War.
Gunnr can be found in Thamur’s Corpse. Like most of the Valkyries, she is themed around the area she dwells in, making her ragged and decrepit. As with every Valkyrie fight in God of War, the first key to victory is making sure that your Runic attack and Spartan Rage meters are filled before you start the fight. Bringing a Resurrection Stone is also a key thing to remember.
One important thing to note; players looking to complete the Odin’s Ravens collectible set should immediately look up and right when you enter Gunnr’s arena. An Odin’s raven can be spotted on a gnarled branch above the area.
Fighting Gunnr
Defeating every Valkyrie is an exercise in learning fighting patterns. Gunnr wields a scythe, making her attacks wide and sweeping. When she jumps into the air and dives towards Kratos, watch for a yellow circle that telegraphs the move. This attack can be dodged, parried, or interrupted by Atreus’ arrows. There is a similar attack where she dashes across the arena at you, which can be avoided in the same ways. Beware if Gunnr dashes towards you with a stab rather than a slash; this attack cannot be blocked.
When Gunnr slashes at you with her wings, block the attacks and then counter when her combo ends. Beware that she will sometimes follow her wing attacks with a sweep of her scythe, which can be dodged or parried. All in all, Gunnr is oriented much more towards melee than her earlier comrades.
Once you have defeated her, the loot is very worthwhile. You will receive Gunnr’s Helmet, a pair of Legendary enchantments called the Etched Relic of Resilience and the Feathers of the Fallen Servant, plus Asgardian Steel.
