Within days of God of War’s release, it was clear that the game was going to be a huge success. Santa Monica Studios’ newest game sold extremely well across the world. Meanwhile, the title was receiving review scores which made it the highest-rated God of War title in the franchise’s history.
However, the sheer scale of God of War’s success was not immediately apparent. Sales figures are not always immediately available. It was learned quickly that the game set a new record for the series in the UK, where it outsold 2010’s God of War III by 35%. The launch week sales were slightly behind those of Far Cry 5 in the UK. However, Far Cry 5 released on PC, Xbox One, and PS4. God of War released exclusively on the PS4.
The Scale of God of War’s Success
All of that is certainly impressive. However, newly released figures show that God of War sold around 3.1 million copies in its first three days alone. That colossal figure means that the game now holds the record for being the fastest-selling PS4 exclusive ever.
Shannon Studstill, studio head of Santa Monica Studios, made a statement on the PlayStation Blog about the success. “I would like to personally thank the millions of fans around the world who decided to embark on Kratos’ latest adventure with us.” she said, “Your support is truly inspiring, and it’s a reason why we push ourselves every day to go beyond the boundaries of play.”
She went on to thank Cory Barlog, God of War’s Creative Director, Yumi Yang, the Director of Product Development, and the rest of Santa Monica Studios. She concluded:
“Belief in the game’s vision and the passion for storytelling across the team is undeniable. We look forward to hearing more about how fans are creating new memories of their favorite God of War gameplay moments that will be remembered for a long time.”
Cory Barlog recently revealed in an interview why God of War took five years to make. He also stated that he had a further five games planned, and that fans would not have to wait so long for the next installment. While nothing is concrete yet, God of War’s success practically guarantees a lengthy future for the series.
