God of War is, without a doubt, a beautiful game. It should come as no surprise, then, that the concept art created for the game is of especially high quality. An art studio known for fine art video game prints recently released a series of God of War art prints; six pieces of the game’s concept art provided by Santa Monica Studios. Now, a selection of the game’s concept art has been showcased online.
God of War’s Concept Art
God of War’s concept art was featured in three art blasts on the website ArtStation, showcasing three parts of the art. The first featured environment and lighting art. The second was a collection of character art, animation, breakables, UI, and VFX. The third and final selection featured pure concept art. It’s quite common for major games to have features such as these online, showcasing the concept art produced for the title. However, few games can boast as much, or as impressive a selection of artwork as God of War.
The art blast featured a precis from Raf Grassetti, the principal artist at Santa Monica Studio. “We sometimes forget how much work is put into something until it reaches the hands of the consumers.” he explained; “As developers and artists, we know and understand that people dedicate their lives to the craft. I am really proud to share the outstanding dedication, passion and creativity of the studio’s art team with the ArtStation community.”
The three showcases feature artwork from a large number of concept artists and animators; highlighting the best artistic work which went into designing God of War. That includes paintings, sketches, 3D renders, and animations.
Santa Monica Studios also published a hardcover art book shortly after the release of God of War. The book, entitled “The Art of God of War,” is a 184-page volume of the game’s concept art.
