God of War released to enormous success last month. Santa Monica Studio’s latest entry in the God of War series broke sales records for the series in the UK, outselling its predecessor by over 35% (with an even greater projected lead in digital sales). Last week, more accurate data revealed that the game had sold over 3.1 million copies in its first three days alone. Now, the game has passed another milestone for its success.
Another Record-Breaking Week
After debuting at no.1 in the UK market, displacing Far Cry 5, God of War has held onto that top spot. It has just claimed its fourth consecutive week at the top of the UK’s boxed sales charts. Digital sales are not so easily tracked. However, it seems quite likely that the game has also been the top-selling title for digital copies as well. While this might seem like just another milestone for God of War, the accolade is more relevant than that. By claiming a fourth week at no.1, God of War has displaced The Last of Us: Remastered from its pedestal. Until now, that game held the record for the longest that a PS4 game has been at no.1 in the UK’s boxed charts.
While Far Cry 5 still holds the record for most copies sold so far this year, God of War has dominated sales since its release (except for in Japan, where it lost out to Nintendo Labo). If it can retain its position at no.1 for another two weeks, it will surpass The Last of Us. That PS3 game holds a six-week record. Thus far, however, God of War has not faced significant market competition.
That may soon change, due to the impending release of Detroit: Become Human. Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition is also due to release on the Nintendo Switch. It is hard to predict how that title will do, given that it is a re-release. Detroit is very likely to sell well, however, due to the long-standing hype surrounding the game. It remains to be seen if God of War will continue to set records, but there can be no doubt that the game has secured the franchise’s future for a while to come.
