When God of War launched in April, Santa Monica Studio’s new game immediately shot to the top of the best-selling lists. The game success was rapid and marked, displacing Far Cry 5’s former top spot. Now that figures for the game’s first month have become available. The data confirms what was obvious already; that God of War was an incredible success. However, they highlighted a new accolade for the title. God of War’s launch month was in fact the best launch month on any PlayStation exclusive title ever.
A Record-Breaking Month
God of War was the bestselling title in the US during its launch month, and set a new series record for God of War in the UK. The new game sold over 3.1 million copies in its first three days alone. Much like the performance of Far Cry 5 the month before, God of War claimed that bestselling title despite releasing near the end of the month. The game released on the 20th of April, but in those 10 days it outmatched the debut month performance of every single PlayStation exclusive game ever released. To be clear, that’s not just on the PlayStation 4 either. Every single exclusive title released since the launch of the original PlayStation in 1995.
The previous record for the best debut month of a PlayStation exclusive was the release of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. That game came out in October 2004, exclusive to the PlayStation 2. San Andreas’ record went undefeated for fourteen years, despite the release of many successful PlayStation exclusives in that time, such as Horizon: Zero Dawn and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. Of course, when San Andreas released, there were not as many major game releases each year, so there was likely less competition. Despite the success of more recent games, they were all unable to displace San Andreas from its pedestal. Now, however, God of War will be the game to beat.
