The Valkyries are a series of bosses in God of War which players can challenge after completing the main story. While they make for extremely challenging opponents, the rewards for defeating each Valkyrie are great. Gondul, the third of the Valkyries, can be found deep in the realm of Muspelheim.
As with every Valkyrie boss, the key to victory is preparation. If you plan on challenging Gondul, be sure to plan accordingly. Before entering her arena, take the time to charge up your runic attack meter and your Spartan Rage meter. Having these already maxed out when you start the fight can mean the difference between victory and defeat. In addition, and as with previous bosses Eir and Geirdriful, always bring a Resurrection Stone. You never know when you might need one, especially when fighting a Valkyrie.
Fighting Gondul
As expected for a Valkyrie who dwells in Muspelheim, most of Gondul’s attacks are fiery. She has two sets of projectiles; fireballs and knives. In the first instance, Gondul will rain three fireballs down over an area, setting fire to the ground, and she will often follow that up with a barrage of knife-like bolts. These can be blocked.
Her melee attacks are much more dangerous, however. When Gondul charges at you, dodge away at once. You cannot block this stabbing attack. Like her comrade Eir, she has a two-swing melee attack. The first strike lands on the ground and deals area of effect damage, so be sure to dodge and avoid the follow-up swing. If she attacks with her wings while up close then she can be blocked.
One of Gondul’s most deadly attacks is an aerial explosion. She will telegraph this attack by leaping into the air and whirling her staff. If she completes the attack, she will cause a massive explosion, so aim to knock her back to the ground with Atreus’ arrows. When Gondul leaps into the air and goes so high as to go off-screen, beware. She will return and land on you, doing very high damage. Roll as soon as you lose sight of her. The ground where she will land catches on fire moments before she lands as an added warning. Once she has landed, you can take advantage of the opening to attack.
Once the Muspelheim Valkyrie has been vanquished, you will be free to gather up her loot. The rewards consist of Gondul’s Helmet, an Epic enchantment called Leviathan’s Eye, a Legendary enchantment called Raging Inferno of Muspelheim, the Epic wrist armour Gauntlets of the Valkyrie, Epic Asgardian Steel, and regular Asgardian Steel. In addition, keep an eye out for a pair of chests in the area. Inside, you will find a Crest of Surtr, three Greater Crests of Flame, 12 Crests of Flame, 30 Smouldering Ember, and Hacksilver.
