Recently, Rockstar teased the upcoming release of two major updates, one for Red Dead Online and the other for GTA Online. The first has now launched, while the GTA Online Summer Update is likely to arrive in the next few weeks. However, it seems that even more changes are planned beyond that update. A recent retail leak for the game on PS5 suggests that the game could actually be getting 64-player servers.
GTA Online Leak: 64-Player Servers for Next-Gen Consoles
The leak in this case comes from a Dutch retailer, Bol, who recently published a listing for GTA Online on PS5 which includes the detail that the game will feature 64-player servers; a significant increase over the current limit. Of course, this leak should be taken with a grain of salt. It could simply be an error, or indeed, it could be a placeholder which has yet to be updated. However, given that Rockstar has announced that an ‘expanded’ version of GTA Online will be coming to next-gen consoles early next year, it’s certainly possible.

Rockstar has yet to confirm or deny whether this particular detail is true. Presumably, something about the next-gen consoles would make 64-player servers feasible. At present, packed servers (with far less than 64 players) can already cause lag problems for players. Upping the limit to 64 without significantly improving the servers and the hardware handling connections would presumably be unwise.
For now, GTA Online players can look forward to a Summer Update coming in the next few weeks, and then a bigger update later in 2020. That second update will reportedly feature new heists; the first major content drop for GTA Online since the Diamond Casino Heist in late 2019. The game will then be coming to the PS5 and Xbox Series X in early 2020, with remastered graphics and more in the new version.
