As part of tonight’s major PS5 game reveal event, Guerrilla Games has officially unveiled Horizon: Forbidden West; the long-awaited sequel to the critically-acclaimed PS4 exclusive Horizon: Zero Dawn. Forbidden West will continue the story of the original game and will be releasing exclusively for the PS5.
Horizon: Forbidden West Coming to the PS5
It has been almost four years since the release of Horizon: Zero Dawn back in 2017, and the new IP launched to enormous success at the time. Since then, the game has become synonymous with the PS4 and one of PlayStation’s most high-profile exclusive franchises. However, the game had little to no post-launch content, and speculation about potential DLC or a sequel has been circulating for years. Now, we know exactly what to expect.
Horizon: Forbidden West will continue the story left unfinished at the end of Zero Dawn, taking Aloy to new regions set in the ruins of the western United States. As the dramatic announcement trailer showcases, these regions vary widely, from deserts to tropical beaches and dense jungles. Plus, they contain a huge variety of new robots. Perhaps the most notable of these new enemies are massive robotic elephants which seem to be used as war machines by a new enemy tribe.
The trailer also shows off a few new gameplay mechanics which will be coming in Forbidden West. Aloy will be able to dive underwater, for example, introducing new aquatic enemies and areas to explore. Of course, as this is only the announcement, details are still relatively scarce. The game’s release window was not stated. This was a common theme throughout the PS5 event, but does suggest that Forbidden West may be coming sometime in 2021 rather than at console launch. For now, fans will have to wait for Guerrilla Games to release more concrete information.
