Gundam Franchise to Get the Live-Action Film From Pacific Rim Producers

If there’s one thing that you can count on, it’s that Legendary Studios know how to make a damn good mecha film. So fans of the Gundam franchise can rest easy knowing that even if this video game film goes south, as video game films often do, then it’ll at least look damn good. Gundam has dominated Bandai Namco’s toyline for many years and it’s still going strong (despite the franchise’s latest video game flop) enough that we figure there will be more than a few people lining up to see this film.

This news comes from the ongoing Anime Expo 2018, which revealed that Legendary and Sunrise will be teaming up to bring the first ever live-action Gundam film to life. Gundam has been around ever since 1979 where Yoshiyuki Tomino‘s Mobile Suit Gundam anime series told the story about humans piloting gigantic mobile suits. But it wasn’t just about that, it also spoke about hard-hitting topics such as colonialism, slavery, and political dissidents. It’s a great anime series, and even if you’ve not been interested in it before, you should at least give it a watch now.

Not much more information was revealed about the Gundam live-action film, apart from film producer Cayle Boyter would be heading it. This may cause some concern for some, as Pacific Rim: Uprising failed to convince audiences it was worth a watch, but there is the fact that there may be some other, more worrying reasons on why the film may not live up to the franchise’s name.

Live-action films, particularly ones originally depicted in Japan, often run the risk of characters and the world they live in to be white-washed. Just look at Scarlet Johansson’s Ghost in the Shell and how that was a major flop. Some fans will avoid the film entirely if this is the case, so we hope the Legendary team know what their doing otherwise a film like this (which could be successful) may just fail.
