Wood is one of the most commonly-used resources in Fallout 76, and plays a key role in the game’s cooking system. Given that these are more important than ever thanks to the addition of true survival mechanics, ensuring a steady supply of Fallout 76 wood is vital. Fortunately, it’s not too difficult to come across.
How and Where to Find Fallout 76 Wood
The primary source of Fallout 76 wood, like most raw materials, is junk items. As you wander West Virginia, you should be gathering up as much junk as you can. Carrying lots of junk does carry some risk of losing it if you die, however, so be sure to scrap it as regularly as possible at a workbench and then store it safely in your C.A.M.P. Stash. For wood, look for any junk items lying around which are made primarily of wood.
Pencils, for example, are commonly found throughout Fallout 76. Despite being very small, you can get enough wood from a single pencil to make boiled water or cook a meal (somehow). Don’t discount the smaller items like these; they often weigh less and contain disproportionate amounts of resources compared to larger items. Once you have plenty of wooden junk items, simply take them to a workbench and scrap them into the raw materials. This will give you “wood scraps.”
There is another easy way to source Fallout 76 wood, which is to take it directly from trees. Unfortunately, you can’t harvest wood from just any tree in the game. Instead, you’ll need to look for fallen trees, stumps, or logs. Some of these give you an option to “Gather,” when you approach. Gathering wood here typically rewards you with between 2-8 wood scraps. This is slightly more convenient, as the wood is already in its raw material form and doesn’t need to be scrapped. If you want to really ensure yourself a reliable supply of wood, you’ll want the Woodchucker Perk Card. This Luck card allows you to collect twice as much wood scraps when you harvest it directly from stumps and fallen trees.
