When the second Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Beta event starts on the 19th of September, fans will get to experience the game’s crossplay feature for the first time. Until now, the Alpha and Beta events have been solely available on the PS4. With the addition of PC and Xbox One, Modern Warfare crossplay can now be explored. According to Activision, this feature is something which players can opt in or out of, and there are some additional prerequisites.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Crossplay and How it Works
Details about the Modern Warfare crossplay mechanics were recently revealed by Activision in an official blog post. Interestingly, this will be the first time that crossplay has ever featured in Call of Duty. Indeed, crossplay in general is still very rare, primarily due to PlayStation’s reticence to permit it on their platform. According to Activision, players will need to have a COD account, and will then be able to opt in or out of crossplay in the game.
“In Modern Warfare,” reads the blog post; “crossplay has been designed to factor play balancing across differences in controller type. No one should feel an unfair advantage. Plus, players have choices on which control device they wish to use on any platform”. What this means is that PS4 and Xbox One players can use keyboard and mouse, and PC players can use controllers. However, players will only be able to play against other players using the same control scheme. So if you use a controller, you’ll play against players using controllers regardless of platform, and if you keyboard/mouse, you’ll play against players using keyboard/mouse. There will be the option of a special lobby where this filter is removed.
The reason why you’ll need a COD account to use crossplay is that Infinity Ward is using COD accounts to allow players to create “cross-platform Friends lists and Parties”. As a result, you’ll be able to set up lists via your COD account for friends, regardless of platform. Crossplay will be available in all multiplayer modes. However, Infinity Ward and Activision have no plans to enable it for Ranked Play or tournaments.
