Borderlands is a series that, on the whole, is relatively forgiving when it comes to respawning. In most areas, players can respawn straight back into the fight, with only certain boss-fights actually sending players back to the start of a battle. However, as part of its higher difficulty, the new Takedown at the Maliwan Blacksite has a different sort of Borderlands 3 respawn system. Respawning in this mission is a fair bit trickier.
How the Borderlands 3 Respawn System Works in Takedowns
Takedown at the Maliwan Blacksite is a new endgame mission designed for a team of four players at level 50. While it is meant to be highly replayable, it’s also meant to be harder than most of the base game. As part of that, it has its own, more restrictive, Borderlands 3 respawn system. This system isn’t actually different until you die, however; when you go down, the Fight For Your Life state works as normal, and you can still get Second Wind. In fact, because of how the respawn system works, Second Wind is even more important than normal. Plus, players in the team should prioritise reviving downed allies if they can. If anybody does die, things will get much harder, because they won’t be coming back. (At least not right away.)
When you die during a Takedown mission, you don’t respawn as you would in the main game. Instead, you enter a Spectator state. You can watch your teammates, but you can’t do anything else. However, this doesn’t mean that you can’t ever come back. There are two points during the mission where respawns can be triggered. Of course, getting to those points with missing members of the team will be that much harder.
If you die prior to the Valkyrie Squad boss-fight, then you’ll respawn when your teammates win that fight. However, if you die after this point, then for all intents and purposes you won’t be able to help your teammates complete the Takedown. However, you will get one final respawn point. If your teammates can somehow win the final boss-fight against Wotan the Invincible, then you’ll respawn once again. The Takedown is effectively over at this point, but it will allow you to claim the loot at the end of the mission which you would otherwise miss out on.
If you want to try the Takedown out for yourself, Borderlands 3 is actually free to play on consoles this weekend. (Although getting to a high enough level in time may be a tall order!) If you are trying out the game, be sure to use this code for 3 Golden Keys which is valid until the end of the weekend.
