Less Than 0.25% of PS4 Games Won’t be Backwards Compatible on PS5

For some time now, Sony has been clear that the upcoming PlayStation 5 console will boast near-complete backwards compatibility with the existing PlayStation 4 library. Now, Sony has confirmed the exact list of which games won’t be compatible, and it’s only a handful of titles; less than 0.25% of the PS4’s total library.

PS5 Backwards Compatibility: “PS4 Only Games”

According to Sony, out of all of the games which were released for the PS4, just 10 won’t be playable on the PS5. All told, the PS4’s total library consists of around 4,000 games, making this a fairly insignificant figure overall. However, while every other PS4 game should feature PS5 backwards compatibility, Sony has warned that performance may vary from title to title. Accordingly, the company has recommended that players test their games before buying any DLC, add-ons, etc. Although the PS5 hardware is obviously far better than that of the PS4, many games will have been designed for a different framework, meaning that they may be poorly optimised for the new console. Some games – particularly newer titles – could see significant reductions in load-times, more stable frame rates, and so on. However, this is unlikely to be universal.

Of course, many newer games, or those getting active updates, are also getting upgrade patches for the PS5. These are designed to unlock the full potential of the new hardware, boosting frame-rate stability, graphical quality, and so on. Not all such upgrades will be available when the console launches, of course. The Cyberpunk 2077 upgrade, for instance, won’t arrive until early 2021.

In addition to PS4 games, PS4 controllers and game pads will also feature PS5 backwards compatibility. However, they will only work when playing PS4 games. Specialty controllers, such as flight sticks or driving wheels, should work with both older games and newer PS5 games. As a final note, Sony has confirmed that the PS5 HD Camera will not be compatible with any PS4 games. As such, if players want to use the Camera with older games, they will need to use a PS4 Camera with an adaptor for the PS5.
