Madden 19 Offense: How To Call Audibles, Use Hot Routes For Receivers
In the game of football, setting up a play before the team gets on the field is usually the way to go, but there are times when coaches decide a change is necessary. That’s when calling an audible comes in handy, and especially so when you’re facing tough competition in Madden 19. Here’s our guide on how to call audibles in Madden 19, as well as changing hot routes when you need to for offense.
How to call audibles in Madden 19
An audible is a decision to change up your play on the field. You may set up for a smart passing play and realize the way the defense is set up against you requires a quick change in what play you’ll use. That’s when you can call an audible in Madden 19 to throw the previous play out the window and surprise your opponent.
To call an audible in Madden 19, wait for your offense to get all set up at the line of scrimmage on the field. Once they’re ready, press the Square button on the PlayStation 4 controller, or the X button on the Xbox One controller.
As seen above, a smaller “Audibles” menu box pops up in the lower right corner of your screen. When it first pops up, it has other plays you can call using the current offensive formation. Press the corresponding button on your controller to the play you’d like to change to. If you want a play from another formation, simply press the Left to Right buttons on your controller’s direction pad.
Make sure to keep an eye on the play clock as it will be running down. Once you have the desired play click the applicable button and you’ve changed your offensive play. You can always press the R2/RT on your controller to preview the play so you know who is going where.

How to use Madden 19 Hot Routes
Another thing you can do on offense is to use hot routes. In the NFL, this is where they adjust a receiver’s route in anticipation of avoiding a blitz or sack from the defense. In the video game, wait for your offense to be at the line of scrimmage and then press Triangle on PS4, or the Y button on Xbox One.
A small box menu pops up in the bottom right corner of the screen. Each of your receivers will have a corresponding controller button on the screen and on the menu. Press the controller button for the receiver whose route you’d like to change.
Once you select the receiver, you’ll see the small box menu has “WR Hot Routes” in it. Use the Left and Right Stick on your controller to choose from the Hot Routes. Select what you feel is a helpful change for your receiver.
In addition, you can use a Smart Route on that menu box. With a Smart Route, you can shorten or lengthen the receiver’s route towards the first down line. This can be a great way to change up the way your play is going and confuse the defense. It also helps get the ball away quickly and get a first down if the defense is rushing your QB.
