On Monday, the Madden 21 ratings reveal week kicked off on ESPN with the announcement of the first 99 Club member for the new EA game. Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is the first official member of the club revealed with the best possible rating. The news arrives after a season in which the former NFL MVP helped lead the Chiefs to a Super Bowl title, and survived the alleged Madden cover curse.
Patrick Mahomes gets 99 OVR for Madden 21 ratings
The Madden 21 game is over a month away, but the anticipation will build more in the coming days. All week, ESPN will present various Madden 21 ratings, with members of the 99 Club arriving on their daily Get Up! program. Monday brought the announcement that the Madden 20 cover star and Super Bowl champion Patrick Mahomes will start the game at 99 overall.
That’s a perfect rating for the man who guided the Chiefs to their first Super Bowl victory in 50 years. It also bests the number he started Madden 20 with, a 97 overall, showing his improvement from start to finish last season.
In just three seasons, Mahomes has quickly risen amongst the ranks of the NFL’s stars. He achieved the league’s MVP award for his 2018 season, and then helped propel the Chiefs to a Super Bowl trophy this past season. His career passing stats so far include 9,412 yards and 76 touchdowns thrown on 724-for-1099 completed passes.
Mahomes receives special Madden swag
This year, to honor the 99 Club members for the Madden 21 ratings, the players are receiving a customized trophy and sweet pendant. The trophy was created by experiential designer, Brian B. Madden. The pendant is courtesy of well-known jewelry designer, Jason of Beverly Hills.
A special unboxing video arrived in which Patrick Mahomes received the new items in honor of his accomplishment. His teammate, tight end Travis Kelce, presented Mahomes with the items and congratulated him on the latest career accolade. They also marveled at that shiny custom 99 Club chain.
“I just want to give a shout out to EA Sports. It’s an amazing feeling,” Mahomes said in the video clip.
“You grow up as a little kid and see those guys get that 99 rating. It’s a special thing and to be able to get that 99 rating, that’s something I’ll forever have,” the Super Bowl MVP said.
Mahomes is expected to be one of several 99 Club members announced in the coming days. Last year’s club featured four players with Aaron Donald (Rams), Khalil Mack (Bears), Bobby Wagner (Seahawks), and DeAndre Hopkins (Texans/Cardinals). It’s unknown if any of the Madden 20 club members will return to join Mahomes.
In addition to 99 Club, ESPN will present other Madden 21 ratings through the week on their SportsCenter program. There’s also a live special set to go on the air Friday at 7 p.m. ET through ESPN and their related viewing apps, channels, or web portal.
The new EA Madden 21 video game officially drops on August 28 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows PCs.
