When playing Madden 22 defense, you’ll always want to be prepared for the opposing quarterback to take off and run the ball. This is especially true if it’s a mobile quarterback like Lamar Jackson, Kyler Murray, Cam Newton, or the all-time great Michael Vick. Luckily, you can use a quarterback spy in the Madden game to keep track of the QB in case they decide to run. In this guide, we’ll show you how to use QB spy in Madden 22 so you won’t get burned by them taking off.
What is the a quarterback spy used for?
In football, a quarterback spy refers to a player who is shadowing the QB on defense. Typically, this will be a linebacker or defensive back handling the assignment. The quarterback will basically float right off the line of scrimmage.
If the quarterback moves to the left, then the QB spy will move that way. The same goes if the QB moves to the right. If the quarterback takes off for a run, then the QB spy will chase after them to hopefully prevent a breakaway rushing play.
How to use a QB spy in Madden 22 defense
There’s a way how to use a QB spy in Madden 22 defense, as you’ll assign a linebacker or defensive back to keep tabs on the quarterback.
Once you’ve called your defensive play and are lined up on the field, make sure you’ve got the specific defensive player highlighted to make them QB spy. That player should have a circle under them and their name is visible.
Next, press X on the PlayStation controller to bring up that player’s “Individual Assignment” menu. Press to the Left with the Right Stick to make them a QB spy.
In the screenshot above, we’ve assigned Tremaine Edmunds of the Buffalo Bills as a QB spy to watch Patrick Mahomes, just in case. Check out the video below to see an example.
Once Mahomes snaps the ball, Edmunds hovers around the line of scrimmage area and watches the QB. As Mahomes begins to run with the ball on the play, Edmunds is in the right area for a tackle, and in this instance, causes a fumble.
This can be a very helpful play to use with your Madden 22 defense against dual-threat QBs. That’s especially true when playing online opponents. Many players may use mobile quarterbacks on their Madden Ultimate Team squads such as LJ8, Vick, Randall Cunningham, and others.
Of course, knowing how to QB spy is just one helpful skill. Also, see our guide for how to QB contain in Madden 22. Or check out our guide for how to audible on defense.
