On Tuesday, EA Sports officially dropped the new Madden 21 trailer featuring new gameplay features, players on new teams, rookies, and more. In addition, a first look at the game’s cover athlete Lamar Jackson arrived along with pre-order details. With all that said, PlayStation 4 gamers also finally have details on the Madden NFL 21 PS5 upgrade situation.
How does Madden NFL 21 PS5 upgrade work?
Just like Xbox One gamers can get a free upgrade to the Xbox Series X version of Madden 21, PS4 gamers can get the PS5 upgrade. The Xbox Series X and PS5 upgrade offers are referred to as Dual Entitlement.
For now, all it takes is securing a copy of the new Madden game for PlayStation 4. Anyone who purchases the PS4 version before Madden 22 comes out next year, can get the Madden NFL 21 PS5 upgrade copy for free when it comes out. That gives most gamers plenty of time to get Madden 21, as the Madden 22 game won’t be out until probably August of 2021.
That said, there is some fine print with the upgrade deal for PlayStation 5. Basically, it mentions that anyone who purchases a physical copy of Madden 21 for their console, will need to use that physical copy with a next-gen console that has an optical disc drive. So the only way to upgrade is using the disc on the PS5.
Otherwise, anyone who purchases the game through online downloads will simply log into their platform’s account on the next-gen console to access the Xbox or PS5 upgrade version.
When do PS5 and Xbox Series X arrive?
Madden 21 details for the next-gen consoles are scarce. We have seen some very brief footage of gameplay on Xbox Series X shown in a Microsoft Live video with Patrick Mahomes several weeks ago. It’s likely that PlayStation 5 footage could arrive during EA Play on Thursday (June 18).
However, we don’t have an official release date for the Madden 21 game on PS5 or Xbox Series X yet. That makes sense because there’s no actual date for when the next-generation consoles are coming out. Once that is set, gamers will know exactly when they’ll be able to upgrade to next-gen versions of Madden 21. It will be as soon as they can have the new console.
The consensus right now is a holiday 2020 release date for both of the new consoles. EA Play on Thursday could give us further details about the Madden game or the PS5 release.
