Upon finishing the Defiance Has Fallen main quest, you should automatically start the Fallout 76 Recruitment Blues main quest. This quest will guide you through the process of joining the remnants of the Brotherhood of Steel. It also offers a rather powerful new pistol as a reward; one made from the game’s most valuable resource.
How to Complete the Fallout 76 Recruitment Blues Main Quest
You’ll start the Fallout 76 Recrruitment Blues main quest already in Fort Defiance. Turn right from the room where the quest begins and then right again at the next turn; this will get you to an elevator which is blocked off by a laser grid. To get past this, you need to make peace with the Fort’s security program. Return to the bulletin board where you started and then make your way up to the third floor where you’ll find another elevator with another laser grid. However, this one also has a terminal next to it, and you can use this to register yourself as new personnel… or at least you could if you weren’t denied access.
To get access to the security system, head down the hall to the last room, where you’ll find “Squire Evelyn’s Journal – Page 16.” This will inform you that you need a military-issue ID. The only way to get one of these is to undergo basic training at Camp McClintock, which is the Back to Basic main quest. This quest can actually be done at any time, so you may well have already done it. If not, you need to head over to Camp McClintock in the Forest region to complete Back to Basic. Once you’ve done Back to Basic, you still need to get your new ID printed in Charleston.
The Charleston Capitol DMV
Head for the Charleston Capitol Building, which you should have visited a few times now, and find the Charleston Capitol DMV. On the left side of the room is a terminal where you can choose the “Government ID Application,” option. Once you do this, head over to DMV Bot B2. Print yourself a number from the printer by the robot’s station, then make your way over to the central terminal. When you select the “Boot Up Department B,” option, the robots will begin working. Unfortunately, you will also trigger waves of Feral Ghouls. Fight them off until your number is called.
DMV Bot B2 will now send you out of the building, to the west, where you’ll find a mailbox with an objective marker. Retrieve the Junk Mail, then head back to the robot. Give Bot B2 the Junk Mail, only to be told that you now need a different form. Head out of the building again and cross over to the Charleston Capitol Courthouse. You can find a Blank DMV-AT-21C-V Form on the bottom floor. Once again, return to DMV Bot B2. But wait. Of course, you’re in the wrong department.
Head over and speak with DMV Bot C1 and use the printer. Guess what? You need to “Boot Up Department C,” and fight off more waves of ghouls. Eventually, the robot will call your number and you’ll have another painful experience speaking with it. Of course, you now encounter “Error 34B/1” because you don’t have a valid birth certificate. To continue the application, you need to get the governor’s office to sign off on it. Head south through the building, then turn left and search for the Governor’s Seal, which you can use to stamp your DMV-AT-21C Form. Return to the DMV, hand in the form, and after getting a picture taken you’ll finally get your Military ID Card.
Joining the Brotherhood of Steel
At last, you can head back to Fort Defiance. Make your way to the top of the building where you were denied access by a security terminal earlier in the quest. You can now select the “Scan Military ID Card,” option, which will register you as a member of the Brotherhood of Steel. This will grant you elevator access, allowing you to head up to the previously inaccessible fourth floor. Here, head down the hall and go into the last room on the left. Use the terminal here to read the “URGENT: Touchdown Recovery,” record and the quest will complete. The next main quest, Belly of the Beast, should start automatically. Additionally, you’ll earn a random aid item and a BOS Field Scribe Outfit as reward. Best of all, you’ll also get an Ultracite Laser Pistol, one of the highest-tier of weapons in the game, along with Fusion Cell ammo.
