Marvel’s Spider-Man has been beloved by the critics and fans alike since it hit the Sony PlayStation 4 on September 7. We had a sense that sales numbers were through the roof thanks to the title being at the top of the UK Charts for both weeks it’s been on the market. Now we have an idea of just how popular the game has been and it’s more impressive than we even realized.
Sony has released the sales number of Spider-Man for the first three days it was out and noted it’s a new record for a game’s launch on the console. The company says it sold just over 3.3 million copies in the first three days. That number is especially impressive from a dollars standpoint when you consider Sony is including $399 limited edition PS4s in the 3.3 million copies sold figure.
Even if you had just used the usual $59.99 price tag for every copy sold, you are still seeing the Spider-Man video game outpacing the opening weekend for the Spider-Man Homecoming movie. The movie brought in around $117 million in the opening box office. Marvel’s Spider-Man for the PS4 made brought in at least $198 million.
Even if the special edition PS4s weren’t a big part of the first three days’ sales, it’s a safe bet the game topped $200 million considering there are also $79.99 digital deluxe editions available. That edition includes the DLC which will start launching next month.
The story will be getting three more “chapters” that have been bundled together with the title “The City that Never Sleeps.” If you just bought the base game, you can purchase the DLC pack for $24.99.
The first piece of that DLC will expand more on the very brief interactions you’ve had with Felicia Hardy in the base game. Otherwise known as the Black Cat, her chapter is called The Heist and drops on October 27.
Along with the three-part DLC, Insomniac Games has also said it is going to be dropping a patch that will add a New Game Plus mode to Marvel’s Spider-Man. So far, the title seems like its bang is worth the bucks.
