During the course of God of War’s story, you will find yourself face to face with a boss named Mattugr Helson. This hulking troll, also called The Bridge Keeper, is similar to previous troll bosses in the game. The brute guards the Bridge of the Damned, and you will need to bring him down; no easy task.
Fighting Mattugr Helson
Mattugr Helson fights in a similar fashion to some of the other troll bosses in God of War. However, he has a few key differences that might catch you off-guard. When you approach him, he will be using a magic light to ensure that only the dead enter Helheim, and he will proceed to wield that light-emitting obelisk as a massive club. His primary attack form is to chain wide sweeps with that chunk of stone, typically in groups of four. For the fourth and final attack, Helson will slam the obelisk into the ground, dealing AOE damage.
The biggest difference between Helson and previous bosses is his ability to teleport. He will often use this ability to retreat from combat, setting up to use his ranged attacks against you. When he does, aim to close the gap again as quickly as possible. Helson’s arena is very open, giving you almost no cover to use against his projectiles. When Helson teleports, he may occasionally fire waves of magical energy at you. Look for gaps between the waves and run through to avoid taking damage.
Helson also complicates matters by summoning lesser enemies onto the battlefield. None of the Hel-Walkers are particularly dangerous; you will have faced all of them elsewhere in Helheim prior to the boss-fight. However, they can be distracting and also get in your way when Helson teleports. As such, try to clear them out as soon as they appear.
Though Helson should be much easier to bring down than God of War’s Valkyries, he is still a notable challenge on your quest. Once you do slay the icy troll, you can claim his heart and return to Freya.
