The Pokémon Company International and Nintendo announced today that developer Niantic has added a new Pokémon, Melmetal, to Pokémon Go. Melmetal evolves from the recently discovered Meltan, according to a trailer uploaded to The Official Pokémon YouTube channel.
Players will also be able to trade Melmetal to next month’s Switch releases.
A Mythical Evolution Comes to Pokémon Go
Avid players discovered Meltan, a small liquid metal creature with a nut for a head, in the popular mobile game last month. The then-unnamed creature initially transformed into Ditto when captured. But, Meltan is, in fact, an entirely new Pokémon.
With these additions, the franchise is entering uncharted waters for a number of reasons. For one, this is the first time a new creature has been introduced outside of the anime or mainline video games. Secondly, Meltan is now the first Mythical Pokémon to evolve. Celebi, Mew, Deoxys and Marshadow belong to this exclusive class.

“Melmetal was worshiped in ancient times as a Pokémon with the power to create metal. Because of its evolution from Meltan, its body has hardened and is now incredibly sturdy. Melmetal is made of liquid metal,” the companies revealed in a press release. They also said that Melmetal uses its flexible arms as whips to deliver powerful attacks. Melmetal can swing its arms in all directions, thanks to the nuts that form its shoulder joints.
Melmetal is a Steel type. Its moveset includes a physical attack called Double Iron Bash. Meltan can only evolve into Melmetal in Pokémon Go and this process requires 400 Meltan Candies. Melmetal is a big boy, weighing in at 1763.7 pounds and measuring 2.5 meters tall.
