For many months, we’ve all been calling the next gen Xbox “Scarlett.” We knew that was only a codename, so nobody was surprised when we found out that wasn’t the console’s real name. But then, we all thought its official name was “Xbox Series X.” As if that wasn’t confusing enough, now, Microsoft says that it is actually just called the “Xbox.”
The Next Gen Xbox Is Named “Xbox,” Not “Xbox Series X”
The reason many of us believed the next gen console’s name was Xbox Series X is because that was what Phil Spencer seemed to be showing off during The Game Awards. Nonetheless, the name prompted instant confusion, not the least because it sounds so much like Xbox One X.
But now, Business Insider reports that it has spoken to a Microsoft representative. Apparently, the representative said, “The name we’re carrying forward to the next generation is simply Xbox. And at The Game Awards you saw that name come to life through the Xbox Series X. Similar to what fans have seen with previous generations, the name ‘Xbox Series X’ allows room for additional consoles in the future.”
Frankly, we still find this pretty confusing. We have heard rumors that Microsoft is already working on a few different versions of its next gen console, so the bit about “room for additional consoles in the future” doesn’t seem too confusing by itself. But the point we are supposed to take away from this is apparently that we should just be calling the product the “Xbox.”
So hopefully, as we hear more and more about the next gen “Xbox,” the naming convention involving the “Series X” will become more clarified through use. Until then, we will simply continue to keep you up to date with any other news we hear about the next gen console from Microsoft.
