Just ahead of the first game of the 2019 World Series arriving on Tuesday night, the MLB The Show 20 cover athlete is revealed. The Chicago Cubs’ Javier Baez will grace the game’s cover as his team hopes to capture another pennant in 2020. Here are more details about San Diego Studio’s new MLB The Show 20 cover star and what to expect.
Javier Baez is MLB The Show 20 Cover Athlete
When MLB The Show 20 arrives for fans to purchase, the Cubs’ Javier “El Mago” Baez is going to be the man pictured on the front. PlayStation revealed the news on Monday (Oct. 21) via an official blog post. Baez achieves his first cover after a season with a .281 batting average, 29 home runs, 85 RBIs, and 89 runs in his 531 plate appearances.
Baez joins previous cover athletes including Ken Griffey Jr., Aaron Judge, Josh Donaldson, Miguel Cabrera, and Bryce Harper.
Here’s a look at the new Javier Baez MLB The Show cover in all its glory:
In addition to their blog post, PlayStation also released a YouTube video announcement (below) for the cover athlete and upcoming game. In the clip, they pay a visit to Chicago and of course, the legendary Wrigley Field. The crew takes pictures of Baez, and get his thoughts on getting to be on the MLB The Show 20 cover. Along the way, highlights of Baez’s impressive plays are shown.
The 26-year-old star of the Chicago Cubs gets the nod as cover star, following in the footsteps of MLB The Show 19’s Bryce Harper. Interestingly, Harper was the cover star for months but with MLB free agency going on, he didn’t have an official team.
Harper ultimately signed with the Phillies. It was a rough start for his career in Philadelphia. Harper had good numbers, but ultimately it wasn’t enough to get the Phillies (81-81) into the postseason.
Baez’s Cubs didn’t make the postseason either, finishing 84-78 and third in the National League Central. However, the team won the World Series in 2016 ending the longest World Series Championship drought. Baez, a two-time All-Star and former Silver Slugger will enter his seventh year in the league.
What is MLB The Show 20’s release date?
In addition to revealing the cover with Javier Baez, PlayStation also gave fans an official release date. The new MLB The Show 20 game arrives on March 17, 2020.
Pre-orders are currently available through the Sony PlayStation 4 exclusive title at the PS website here. MLB The Show 20 Standard edition will be $59.99 USD or $79.99 CAD. Here’s the official announcement trailer:
Of course, many fans are also awaiting the new PlayStation 5, tentatively scheduled for the holiday season in 2020. The new technology will allow more details and other creative aspects as video games head into the future. Even so, MLB The Show fans are hoping that the new version of the main baseball title on the market will deliver.
Now everyone will anxiously await the game’s arrival next March, but luckily the World Series is here to satisfy baseball cravings. Game 1 begins on Tuesday night for the Washington Nationals and Houston Astros.
