The next version of MLB the Show isn’t too far away, and Wednesday brought the first look at some of the gameplay that will be part of the title. A new MLB The Show 20 gameplay trailer features a number of baseball stars in action, whether pitching from the mound, hitting, or making plays on the diamond.
MLB The Show 20 gameplay trailer arrives
A few months ago, news arrived that the Chicago Cubs’ Javier Baez will be the new MLB game’s cover athlete. Baez is featured as part of the first MLB The Show 20 gameplay trailer video. Gamers see the Cubs star batting at the plate and even beating a throw at home plate as part of the newest video.
There are plenty of other stars who appear in the video such as last year’s cover athlete Bryce Harper, now playing with the Philadelphia Phillies. Braves star Ronald Acuna is there celebrating with teammates. Other players shown include Mike Trout, Paul Goldschmidt, and the first look at Gerrit Cole on his new team, the New York Yankees.
Not only are there current stars in the video, but some of the all-time greats. That includes Ken Griffey Jr. and Gary Sheffield amongst the early teases for a few in-game legends. Towards the end of the new trailer, gamers see Boston Red Sox legend David “Big Papi” Ortiz and then the back of pitcher Mariano Rivera as he’s trotting out on the field.
One of the noticeable aspects of the new MLB The Show 20 gameplay appears to be the player animations. Just from scenes in the trailer, there are new team celebrations in the dugout or at the plate. There’s also frustrated players throwing their bat down after a strikeout and an umpire giving the emphatic “Out” call as a player strikes out.
Otherwise, everything looks crisp and smooth just like MLB The Show 19 came across for gameplay. This year’s game brings the 15th anniversary of the MLB The Show franchise. Based on early descriptions, there will be more modes, customization, and new ways to get rewards than before.
Game exclusive to PlayStation, pre-order details
So far, this appears to be the last installment in the franchise that is exclusive to the PlayStation console. An announcement arrived that the game would finally become available for Xbox and other consoles in the future. That will happen thanks to a new deal involving game developers San Diego Studio and MLB.
The upcoming game is available for pre-order on the PlayStation website. There is an MVP Edition, Digital Deluxe Edition, and 15th Anniversary GameStop Exclusive. By pre-ordering MLB The Show 20, gamers will get early access to start playing the game on March 13, 2020. Otherwise, the official release date is March 17.
