MLB The Show 21 Home Run Derby Choice Packs, Moonshot Event Bring Upgraded Player Cards to Diamond Dynasty
The annual MLB All Star Game is back for 2021 and ahead of the game itself is the exciting Home Run Derby. This year’s group includes many of the game’s biggest stars looking to put their name in the history books. Among them are cancer survivor Trey Mancini of the Baltimore Orioles and pitching/hitting sensation Shohei Ohtani. Along with Monday’s event, a special MLB The Show 21 Home Run Derby Choice Pack is coming to Diamond Dynasty. Here are the latest details on the Derby, the packs, and the current Moonshot event in The Show.
HR Derby makes return after 2020 absence
In 2020, the Home Run Derby was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but now it’s back. A star player will join winners which include Pete Alonso in 2019 and MLB The Show cover star Bryce Harper (2018). Many legends of the game are also HR Derby winners including three-time winner Ken Griffey Jr., Orioles’ iron man Cal Ripken Jr., and David “Big Papi” Ortiz.
With MLB The Show 21, gamers are able to set up their own Home Run Derby between legends and current stars. However, Monday (July 12) evening will bring the real-life event featuring eight of the game’s heavy hitters. They’ll try to blast the most longballs out of Colorado’s Coors Field to grab the 2021 crown. ESPN will carry the televised and live-streaming online coverage through their sports network.
Which players are in the 2021 HR Derby?
The field includes Los Angeles Angels star Shohei Ohtani, who is also headed to the All-Star Game and will be a lead hitter. Ohtani was considered the odds-on-favorite via betting odds ahead of the Texas Rangers’ Joey Gallo. They were followed by Pete Alonso (Mets), Matt Olson (Athletics), Trevor Story (Rockies), Salvador Perez (Royals), Juan Soto (Nationals), and Trey Mancini (Orioles).

Ohtani is clearly the favorite based on his season performance so far. The Angels’ pitching and hitting star has 33 home runs to lead all players in MLB so far. The only other Derby competitor in the top five is Joey Gallo. So most fans and analysts are expecting a show from Shohei.

MLB The Show 21 Home Run Derby Choice Pack for Diamond Dynasty
Ahead of the contest, an announcement came that MLB The Show 21 Home Run Derby Choice Pack is coming to Diamond Dynasty. Most likely, this pack will feature a special card or two from the big event featuring players who did well, including the 2021 Home Run Derby winner. Could it be Shohei Ohtani, Trey Mancini, Juan Soto, or someone else?
In MLB The Show 20, they released a Home Run Derby pack featuring a variety of players. They included stars like Jason Giambi, Dave Parker, Giancarlo Stanton, Yoenis Cespedes, Luis Gonzalez, and Robinson Cano. Their cards were all Diamonds with ratings from 82 to 97 overall. Packs cost 20,000 MLB The Show Stubs.
Moonshot Event also available in Diamond Dynasty
Along with the recent Team Affinity cards for All-Star 2021, there’s also the limited-time Moonshot Event in Diamond Dynasty. The event officially launched on July 9 and will run until 11 a.m. PT (2 p.m. ET) on Thursday, July 15.
The requirements for the event including using a minimum pitcher overall of 60 OVR with a maximum player overall of 99 OVR. The max for the team is also 99 OVR. The difficulty is All-Star level with three-inning games. The stadium lock is Colorado’s Coors Field, where the HR Derby takes place this year.
By winning in the event, gamers can add Diamond cards for Yoenis Cespedes LF, Luis Campusano C, and Jacob Greinke SP to their rosters.
