This past Friday and Sunday, 16 NBA players were involved in a fierce competition on video game consoles remotely as they battled it out in an NBA 2K tournament. The “Players-Only” event was televised on ESPN and ESPN2 and featured stars such as Kevin Durant, Donovan Mitchell, and DeMarcus Cousins. After the first round, those three players are one and done. We have a look at the NBA 2K Players Tournament bracket matchups as we move towards the next round.
NBA 2K Players Tournament Bracket shows quarterfinals matchups
After Friday night’s first-round tournament results, just one of the quarterfinals matchups was set. That one will feature the No. 2 seed, Trae Young battling upset-minded No. 10 seed DeAndre Ayton. The Phoenix Suns star already took out No. 7 Zach LaVine in the opener, but now he’ll take on a guy who put up over 100 in his first 2K20 game of the tourney.
With Sunday’s 2K results, we now know who will play in the other three matchups. The Clippers’ Montrezl Harrell is the No. 8 seed and he’ll take on the lowest seed of the tournament, No. 16 Derrick Jones Jr. of the Heat. Jones eliminated Kevin Durant in a huge upset in the first matchup of the tourney.
The Phoenix Suns’ Devin Booker could be one to beat in this tournament. As the No. 5 seed, he looked solid in the opener against Michael Porter Jr. He’ll battle No. 13 seed Rui Hachimura who held off No. 4 Donovan Mitchell in the closest game of the NBA 2K Players Tournament bracket so far.
The final matchup of the quarterfinals will feature two guys capable of talking some trash, but also who proved they’ve got serious skills on 2K. Patrick Beverly destroyed and demoralized his first-round opponent Hassan Whiteside. Andre Drummond took down DeMarcus Cousins in the final game of the first round, and did so by 52 points!
Favorites to win the 2K tournament
We looked at the NBA 2K Players-Only Tournament odds before this started and it had Kevin Durant amongst the favorites. He’s out, but Trae Young was up there with him, and the Hawks All-Star is ready to show he’s the man to beat.
Behind KD (+500), Young was +600 heading into the tournament, followed by Ayton at +650. Booker was a +1000 favorite to win it all, while Drummond was at +1200. Meanwhile, Hachimura and Harrell were listed as +1600 favorites. Derrick Jones Jr. and Pat Beverly were long shots at +2000 odds, but we’re seeing these odds may have been way off.
Right now, all of the guys in the quarterfinals look like they’ll provide some interesting battles on the sticks. Based on some of the routes, as well as the fact a number of players used the top teams early on, it should get interesting. We can’t wait for the next round to get going!
Coverage will continue through the ESPN/ESPN2 television channels along with live streaming on WatchESPN network.
