With the best basketball players on the planet all sidelined as the NBA season is suspended, the league will turn it’s attention to the NBA 2K game. The NBA is planning to have a players-online NBA 2K Tournament in which some of the best gamers in the league will compete. So far, details are still underway, but at least a few notable players appear to be part of the field of competitors.
NBA 2K Tournament to feature Donovan Mitchell among others
First-time NBA All-Star Donovan Mitchell is one player revealed as a potential participant so far. Mitchell was the second NBA player to have a positive test for coronavirus. That came less than a day after teammate Rudy Gobert, was the first reported case, causing the league to suspend the season.
Both players have since recovered. Mitchell has been popping up to play NBA 2K online during the league’s hiatus. That included going head-to-head with NBA 2K promoter Ronnie 2K and dropping 34 points with his own virtual self in the win.
Another player mentioned for the tournament is former All-Star and Lakers roster member DeMarcus Cousins. It’s unknown if he’ll participate as a member of a specific team, or just as a free agent in the tournament.
Yahoo Sports’ Chris Haynes indicated the tournament will feature 16 players and span 10 days. ESPN could begin broadcasting the tournament Friday, although details are still being finalized for the event, per Yahoo! Sports.
Other sports games and networks hosting events
With the season currently on hiatus, the NBA 2K20 game has been presenting fans with daily simulation score updates for the scheduled games. Based on their standings, nine teams have already clinched spots in the postseason including the Lakers, Clippers, Bucks, and Celtics.
Not only has the NBA season been on pause due to the coronavirus pandemic, but also the NHL and MLB. We previously reported how several Washington, DC sports networks were showing live Wizards and Capitals simulation games on TV or online.
In addition, EA’s popular football game Madden 20 has been under the spotlight with several tournaments. That included this past Sunday’s Madden NFL Invitational presented by FOX on the FS1 channel. On Wednesday, The Checkdown will present an eight-player Madden Tournament live streaming on Twitch.
