In an early preview of some of what’s to come for the new basketball game, NBA 2K20 presented an overview of their new MyGM 2.0 and MyLeague mode. It’s been given quite an overhaul to incorporate a number of new changes into this franchise aspect of the game. Among them are a new action points system, a new skill tree, and the addition of personality badges for free agents. Here are more details about these updated NBA 2K20 MyGM and MyLeague features.
NBA 2K20 MyGM Action Points system
A lengthy 2K post arrived on Monday (July 29) which details all of the features for MyLeague and MyGM in the new game. One of those new parts of the game will be an Action Points (AP) system. With this, gamers are allotted a certain amount of points to use per day in whichever way they decide.
It’ll take some strategic decision-making to know what ways to try to use these AP. They can be spent on talking to players or staff, pursuing trades, or even playing games on the schedule. That gives gamers a chance to make the best decisions for how to improve their team.
NBA 2K presented a screenshot of the new overview landing menu for MyGM (see below). In the image is the Action Points stats on display up top, and the daily allotment in the lower left corner. Also shown, are important MyGM schedule items such as upcoming games, personnel meetings, and a tasks on the to do list.
The Action Points will be based on the difficulty level you choose for your franchise in the 2K20 mode. The easier the difficulty setting you choose, the more daily Action Points you’ll get on a daily basis. However, the hardest setting brings the least AP.
New Skill Tree system
From year to year, many gamers felt 2K was just reusing the same goals in the MyGM mode. NBA 2K developers overhauled this with some of the new features including the Skill Tree. The new Skill Tree system involves focusing on different tasks to accumulate MyGM Skill Points.
The Skill Tree gives gamers different styles for constructing a successful team. At Level 1, gamers choose a specific style or branch of the tree and then branch out to other skills.
Here’s a screenshot of the Skills Tree and 2K’s list of the five main branches of the tree.
- Leadership (L) – A man of the locker room, a leadership-focused GM is better able to build the trust of those around them, gain boosts for playing games, and lower trust loss in press conferences.
- Diplomacy (D) – A way with words, a diplomatic GM can build trust by having chit chats with several different groups, can help improve revenue and help sign more big-name free agents.
- Insight (I) – A deep sense of understanding, an insightful GM can understand what affects the mood and trust of those around him, access the trade finder, or improve scouting.
- Finance (F) – An eye for the bottom line, a financial GM can improve revenue, sign players for less and gain additional sponsorship slots.
- Facilities (FC) – A man with the plan, a facility-oriented GM can choose from a specialty facility for a permanent boost to one of five areas, can help boost players on game days or turn high attendance into improved relations with sponsors.
Through this new feature, increased experience brings more Action Points or the ability to bank AP day-to-day basis. As NBA 2K suggests, each of these different skills are meant to change the way gamers play in this mode.
What are Personality Badges?
Relationships and interactions are always part of the MyGM mode. The new 2K20 Personality Badges may come into play for free agents that are looking for max deals. The personality styles impact a free agent’s interactions with the GM. It could also determine their level of interest and if they ultimately re-sign or leave.
Here’s a look at the NBA 2K20 descriptions of the new badges in the game.
- Media Ringmaster – This player thrives in front of the cameras and prefers to play in big markets. Pretty straightforward, you should expect players with this badge to be more likely to sign to a big market team.
- Warm Weather Fan – These are for the beachgoers that would rather play in warm, temperate climates and avoid the really cold home teams.
- Finance Savvy – These are players that factor in the tax rate in where they want to go in the hopes of really making the most out of their money.
Other changes, more information
One of the other great aspects of the updated MyGM and MyLeague will be the leaderboard. Gamers will see how they stack up in their role as GM compared to others trying their hands at it. Adding the 2K20 community in a competitive level will make it more fun as gamers try to build the best team with their resources.
Here’s an official screenshot NBA 2K20 posted to give an idea of how the leaderboard looks.
As mentioned in the Personality Badges section above, there’s an overhaul for relationships, goals, and tasks in NBA 2K20. Much of this is based on feedback the developers took into account. Here are a few of the key areas NBA 2K20 touched upon:
- New Morale and Team Chemistry
- Improved Draft Class Authenticity
- Improved Player DNA

Thoughts on 2K modes, more updates
The new MyGM and MyLeague updates should offer much more of the day-to-day and season-to-season duties with running a team. With the points, skills, and decision-making involved it should be fun too. Gamers will get more of a feel for managing tasks appropriately to see how they impact their team’s success. The leaderboard will be a great way to measure personal success beyond just seeing the team improve.
NBA 2K20 MyGM and MyLeague probably aren’t the most popular modes in the game. However, it appears for those who like to dive into GM project management and decision-making, 2K20 upped the fun level. There’s more competitiveness, roleplaying, and task management aspects to enjoy.
There are likely to be more new features and news updates on the way for other aspects of NBA 2K20. There’s yet to be an official gameplay trailer and many 2K20 player ratings to be revealed. Plenty of gamers are still looking for updates in the Park, MyPlayer, and Neighborhood aspects of NBA 2K. With a 2K20 demo coming out in August, plenty of NBA 2K20 news is going to arrive in the coming weeks!
