It seems that Netflix is doubling down on making video game adaptations following the success of The Witcher (technically a novel adaptation, but its game franchise was arguably better-known). After the recent announcement of a Splinter Cell series, Netflix has announced that a Beyond Good & Evil movie adaptation is now in early development.
Beyond Good & Evil Movie is in Early Development
“Some good news for Beyond Good & Evil fans,” announced Netflix on social media; “A Netflix feature film adaptation of Ubisoft’s epic space pirate adventure is in development.”
Netflix’s statement doesn’t go into any further detail, but more has emerged through recent reporting. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the upcoming film will feature both live-action and animation. Additionally, Rob Letterman is reportedly attached to direct the film. Letterman is best-known for directing Detective Pikachu and the recent Goosebumps movie. Meanwhile, Jason Altman and Margaret Boykin are reportedly producing the movie for Ubisoft Film & Television.

According to reports, the current plan is for the movie to be a feature film adaptation of the original 2003 game. However, it doesn’t yet have a script, and Netflix is currently searching for writers. As such, the project is still very early in development, so fans shouldn’t expect the film to release anytime soon. More likely, the game is still two years away or more from an actual release, assuming it doesn’t get stuck in development at any point.
Beyond Good & Evil 2, a long-awaited sequel to the 2003 title, is currently in development. The first announcement for the game was back in 2017 at E3, but the project has been very quiet since. Earlier this year, Ubisoft said that Beyond Good & Evil 2 will not release during the 2020 fiscal year. That means that the game is likely still a year or more away from release; most likely meaning that it will be a next-gen title.
