The World Ends With You originally released on the Nintendo DS back in 2007, and it was one of the most original JRPG’s that Square Enix published for the handheld system. With a unique multi-tasking battle system that took advantage of both screens, an interesting story taking place in Tokyo, and multi-faceted characters, The World Ends With You can be considered somewhat of a cult classic in the gaming community.
We knew that Square Enix would be bringing the RPG to the Nintendo Switch later this year as an upgraded port, but some new information about this ‘Final Remix’ have surfaced, like the fact that two-player co-op battles would be added with each player using one Joy-Con each.
The music was also one of the main selling points of The World Ends With You, so it’s exciting to hear that not only will all of the music, voice acting, and sound effects be of higher quality, but new songs will be added to the Switch remaster. And if you prefer hearing the original music, don’t fret, you can switch between the old arrangements and the new arrangements freely.
There will also be a new scenario added to the game that explores more of the deep narrative that the RPG has to offer. If you need a refresher on the synopsis of TWEWY, then here’s a quick summary, courtesy of Square Enix themselves:
“Welcome to Shibuya, a mishmash of attitudes and styles in the heart of Tokyo. A boy named Neku wakes up in a crowded intersection with no idea how he got there. As he fumbles with a pin he found in his hand, he realizes he can hear other people’s thoughts. Before he can make any sense of it, he receives a baffling text: “Clear this mission or face erasure.” Suddenly, a countdown appears in the palm of his hand, and strange monsters—the Noise—attack. In the confusion, he meets a girl named Shiki, who insists on teaming up. So begins their mad scramble as they fight off the Noise and try to survive seven days in the Reapers’ Game…”
The World Ends With You: Final Remix launches for the Nintendo Switch sometime this Fall in North America and Europe.
