New Fallout 4 Mod Offers Overhauled Dynamic Lighting and Shadows

A new Fallout 4 mod was released today on NexusMods; the “Fallout 4 Dynamic Lights and Shadows Overhaul”. Of course, there are plenty of Fallout 4 lighting mods already. However, this particular mod seeks to improve exterior lighting specifically, an area which very few lighting mods actually address. There are plenty of Fallout 4 mods which seek to improve textures; one recent release re-skins the game’s synths to resemble the androids from Detroit: Become Human, for example.

The Dynamic Lights and Shadows Overhaul Fallout 4 Mod

The new lighting overhaul mod was made by a modder who goes by “raidenfrank” on NexusMods. According to raidenfrank, the mod removes some “fake” light sources which already exist in Fallout 4, put in new dynamic lighting, and improve the realism of both shadows and lighting at night. For now, the mod is available only in a pre-alpha version for the purpose of testing. Indeed, raidenfrank has called for gamers to test the lighting overhaul mod out and provide feedback. As they address, there are plenty of Fallout 4 mods which improve lighting already. However, for that very reason they are seeking to cater to an underserved niche.

The New Fallout 4 Lighting Mod is Still in Pre-Alpha

“Now there are a lot of awesome lighting enhanced mods,” says raidenfrank, in the mod’s description; “but most of are for “Interior” scenes… For “Exterior” scenes? Emmm, it seems NO ONE? …” Raidenfrank states that they are very well aware of the load on systems for running dynamic lighting. As a result, they are asking for users (especially those with higher-end PCs) to try the mod out and report issues like fps drops. Apparently, raidenfrank has experienced some scenes dropping to a “steady” 20fps. Obviously, this mod is still in its early stages. Hopefully, raidenfrank can produce a final product offering the sort of exterior lighting and shadows which the market is so lacking.
