In a move that caught plenty of gamers by surprise, Santa Monica Studios has released a new God of War trailer. Entitled “God of War – Memories of Mother,” the trailer had many initially hoping that it might be an announcement of DLC. As it turns out, the trailer is merely announcing a new God of War sale.
The “Memories of Mother” Trailer and New God of War Sale
The quiet yet haunting new trailer features a new version of one of the tracks from God of War; Memories of Mother. This track was included in the game’s original soundtrack, but the track backing the trailer is the “Farewell to Faye Version”; both were composed by Bear McCreary and performed by Eivør. The track is available now to listen to on Spotify.
While some players initially hoped otherwise, the Memories of Mother isn’t a herald of upcoming DLC. Rather, the trailer heralds a God of War sale, with the game’s price dropping to $39.99 on the PlayStation Store. It’s unusual for a game to release an entire trailer just to announce a sale. However, it seems likely that Santa Monica Studios is hoping to boost sales over Christmas. Indeed, the game just received a major accolade; it was named Game of the Year at the Game Awards. As such, plenty of gamers who haven’t picked it up yet could be tempted to do so now.
All in all, this seems a sensible marketing move for Santa Monica Studios. By using their recent success and press attention to announce a sale price drop right before Christmas; it seems likely that they’ll be successful in selling more copies. The gaming market is likely to be crowded and competitive over Christmas, with so many new releases having come out in late October and November. Although God of War came out much earlier this year, its recent achievements and this sale could help it compete with newer titles.
