The Next Call of Duty Could be a Black Ops Reboot in 2020

According to potentially leaked information, Activision could be planning for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare to begin a trend of series reboots. Twitter user LongSensation, who has been a reliable source for leaked Call of Duty info in the past, tweeted recently that the Call of Duty 2020 title could be a Black Ops reboot. The game could apparently be set during a broad swathe of the Cold War, including the Korean War and Vietnam.

Could Call of Duty 2020 be a Black Ops Reboot?

Of course, as with all supposedly leaked information online, fans should take this with a grain of salt. After all, a leak last month claimed to reveal upcoming beta dates for Modern Warfare. That leak proved to be incorrect. However, LongSensation has a good track record. They were actually the original source of the information that this year’s Call of Duty would be a Modern Warfare ‘soft reboot’. According to their tweet, the Call of Duty 2020 title could be called either; “Call of Duty: Black Ops,” or “Call of Duty: Black Ops V.”

In either case, this does suggest that Activision may be looking to wipe the slate clean for more than just Modern Warfare. Black Ops was also once one of Call of Duty’s largest series. However, the last entry, Black Ops 4, dropped any story campaign plans in order to focus on battle royale. While it has certainly been successful, it’s also true that the game is now far removed from its roots. Perhaps Call of Duty: Modern Warfare represents Activision shifting the entire Call of Duty franchise to a more realistic and grittier approach. After all, LongSensation adds that the 2020 title is; “Described as even more gritty and gruesome than Modern Warfare. I’m not joking.”

Call of Duty 2020 Black Ops Reboot

Apparently, this Black Ops reboot would feature both the Korean War and Vietnam War, as well as other moments during the Cold War; spanning over forty years of warfare. However, it’s worth noting that this information could still be in early planning stages. The success or failure of Modern Warfare this year could have significant ramifications for the Call of Duty 2020 title. Even if this information is correct now, things could always change for a multitude of reasons. For now, fans will have to wait for any official confirmation. (And indeed, it’s unlikely that one will emerge anytime soon.)
